Megan Hart is best known for writing erotic romances, sometimes mixed in with drama. So, steamy scenes are to be expected. Her last series, Quarry Road, is a contemporary romance and so different from her usual style. This time, she offers yet again something different. Dangerous Promise is a sci-fi romance which is set in the future where wars did a lot of damage and technology made a lot of advancement. It told a story of a once soldier, Nina Bronson, who died serving the country. An experimental surgery that has something to do with internal technology was put into her to saved her life and in the process, her abilities as a soldier were enhanced. She’s faster and much stronger than before. Right after the tech was implanted to 15 soldiers, it was immediately banned. They were forced to leave the army and settle for private security for the rich and famous because they are the only ones who can afford the enhanced service. And now years later, the enhanced are slowly dying. Because the tech inside them needs an upgrade just like any other technology. And yet, there is no way for them to get the upgrade unless they have a powerful and rich person on their side to help them convince the government to change the law. Surprisingly, Nina was hired as a personal bodyguard by Ewan Donahue. The obnoxious billionaire who’s been lobbying publicly against the enhancement and its upgrade. Ewan has been receiving death threats and was even attacked a couple of times that made him hire the best enhanced out there. But not one of them were prepared for the attraction they have for each other. Though both of them, especially Nina, has no intention of taking things further than their usual bickering and bantering, being together 24/7 made the attraction stronger mixed in with an intense desire for each other doesn’t help. And despite the constant threat to Ewan’s life, they found themselves closer than necessary, getting personal with each day they spent in a remote cabin they’re hiding into. But Ewan has a big secret, and as his feelings get deeper, he doesn’t know how long he can keep his secret and not lose Nina. Because he is certain Nina won’t ever forgive him once she learned the truth.

Dangerous Promise is the first book of The Protector series. It surely got an intriguing plot and there is no doubt of how excellent Megan Hart is as a writer and with that, I can’t help but expect it to be good especially knowing that it is something different from her. And sure enough, this turned out to be a decent one. Ewan and Nina are strong characters whom both have interesting stories to tell. A billionaire who’s been hiding secrets and an enhanced human who’s slowly dying. Told in Ewan and Nina’s POVs, it shows how both have strength and power in their own way, though clearly, Nina is the dominant one. I like the interaction between these characters and their constant bantering and flirting can be quite fun to read, but it is also a bit difficult to really connect with them. There are times I can’t seem to understand what was being said or what was happening because there is not enough world-building in the story. Although things are slowly presented as the book progressed, I would prefer it if there’s a little backstory that was immediately introduced at the beginning. Nevertheless, the world they live in is truly fascinating.

Being it a Megan Hart novel, I expected some hot and heavy scenes. And sure, there is that, but the romance is quite a slow burn. But after finding out that all three books of the series are about Ewan and Nina, plus there’s that cliffhanger ending, then this serves as an introductory to the series. Which is somewhat disappointing. It would be nice to know about the other enhanced and discover more about this futuristic setting. It might be a sci-fi romance but it is also not short of action, displaying Nina’s strength. Add the hint of mystery and suspense and you have a dose of everything from this book. I will definitely read the second installment as I already got the copy. Might wait for a while, though. A good read overall and a great start to a series.
